SAILORS at Whale Island in Portsmouth have recreated a historic photograph to drum up support for this year’s Armed Forces Day.

Celebrations will take place all weekend to mark Armed Forces Day, which is today.

To mark the occasion, sailors snapped their own version of the famous ‘Raising the Flag at Iwo Jima’ photograph.

There will be a massive event in Portsmouth’s naval base this weekend for Armed Forces Day.

The Royal Navy and Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard are putting on events over both days.

Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender and Type 23 frigate HMS Westminster will open to visitors each day from 10am until 4pm.

The navy will also host firefighting demonstrations on both days from 10.30am. Youngsters will have the chance to take on sailors and Royal Marines at various games in the dockyard’s Action Stations.
