SAILORS on board several Portsmouth-based ships are heading home after taking part in a massive naval exercise.

Exercise Joint Warrior involved HMS Illustrious, Diamond, Richmond, Westminster, Hurworth and Brocklesby.

They joined forces with ships from several other navies in a combined show of strength off the Scottish coast.

The combined firepower of Royal Navy warships and Royal Artillery gun batteries rang out over the Scottish Highlands as part of the two-week training exercise.

On HMS Diamond, the ship’s company were put to the test in a series of scenarios including engine failures and fires on board.

They also conducted larger-scale gunnery and air defence exercises.
