A SAILOR who swapped a job making furniture for a career in the Royal Navy has completed his training to become a weapons engineer.

Engineering Technician (Weapons Engineer) Christopher Bowyer, 25, from Cowplain, has graduated from HMS Collingwood in Fareham.

He joined the navy in December last year and will now join Portsmouth-based HMS Lancaster as his first ship.

ET Bowyer said: ‘My career highlight to date was passing out of training. I regard this as one of the best days of my life. I’ve relished the challenges and completing training is a real achievement.

‘I now look forward to joining the crew of HMS Lancaster and embarking on my first deployment.’

ET Bowyer, pictured, follows in the footsteps of his dad Martin, who served as a chef in the navy.

Martin said: ‘Having served in the Royal Navy myself for 23 years, I knew that Christopher had the strength of character and sense of humour to pursue a career within the armed forces.’
