EIGHTY sailors from HMS Illustrious honed their disaster relief skills as they dealt with a mock hurricane in Devon.

Crew from the Portsmouth-based aircraft carrier dealt with fires, collapsed buildings and numerous casualties at the Bull Point training site in Plymouth.

‘The disaster exercise is really important training for the crew of Illustrious and the Flag Officer Sea Training staff made it seem very real indeed,’ said the ship’s executive officer, Commander Matt Harvey, who was in charge of the teams on the ground.

He added: ‘I have no doubt that the ship’s company are now much better prepared should they be tasked to do this for real in the future.’

Illustrious is nearing the end of her training after coming out of a £40m refit earlier this year.

It is due to conclude with a final assessment on December 8.
