SAILORS raised £900 for charity by marching for 56 miles through the New Forest.

The Royal Navy team, from HMS Sultan, replicated the famous ‘yomp’ carried out by Royal Marines during the Falklands War.

It is part of a series of commemorative events to mark the 30th anniversary of the conflict. They set off on Friday and finished with a heroes’ welcome in Beaulieu on Sunday.

Chief Petty Officer Dan McCormack said: ‘It was fantastic.

‘So many people were stopping as and asking us what we were doing.

‘At Beaulieu we were met by people cheering for us.

‘The lads found it hard but they kept going.

‘There was a bit of a competitive element to it.’
