THE stripping of the soon-to-be decommissioned HMS Ark Royal continues at a pace – this time with the sailors’ mattresses being taken away.

Up to 600 mattresses were taken off the former flagship at Portsmouth Naval Base this week.

But in these times of cuts they aren’t heading for the rubbish tip.

Newcastle-based firm Palatine Beds will instead take the mattresses to their factory where they will be refurbished.

The covers will be removed, the mattress will be repadded then recovered, before being returned to the naval stores in Portsmouth four weeks later.

Andrew Waters, sales and marketing manager at Palatine Beds, said: ‘It is a huge honour to be awarded this contract.

‘The Ark Royal was built on Tyneside, so while it is extremely sad that such a great ship will no longer be in service, we are proud to be a part of the decommissioning process.’

Ark Royal is due to be decommissioned next month.
