SOLDIERS from 47 Regiment got on their bikes and pedalled hell for leather.

The group of nine, based on Thorney Island, near Emsworth, undertook the five-hour stationary cycle at Tesco, in Havant, in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund.

They cycled 396 miles – a mile in memory of each of the soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

Captain James Burnett said he was delighted with the support he and the rest of the team had received from the public.

He said: ‘It was hard work but well worth it.

‘The public were amazingly generous. In a few hours they donated £1,040, which is brilliant.

‘We hear a lot about other charities but the difference between them and the Army Benevolent Fund is that all the money goes direct to the soldiers who need it.

‘They may need it because of family problems or they may have left the services but still need help.

‘The charity is always there for them and that’s why we chose it.’

There is still time to donate by going to justgiving.com/HQbatterychallenge.
