SHOPPERS at Gunwharf Quays will be treated to free performances from some of the world’s top military musicians this weekend.

Forty musicians from Portsmouth’s Royal Marines School of Music will give hour-long marching displays on Friday and Saturday.

The performances start at 12.30pm on Friday and 1.30pm on Saturday, and are being staged to promote the band’s forthcoming concert at Portsmouth Guildhall on August 3.

Shoppers will hear highlights from the Guildhall concert which will start at 2pm and end with a Beating Retreat marching ceremony in Guildhall Square.

Major Jason Burcham, director of music training at the Royal Marines School of Music, said: ‘The concert at the Guildhall is exactly what you’d expect from the Royal Marines Band Service – the world’s best music played by the best military musicians, and the Beating Retreat is going to be one of the biggest ever seen in Portsmouth.’
