Lieutenant Commander Nick Unwin, 37, from Southsea, the commanding officer of HMS Penzance, said: ‘I wear my poppy as a small gesture that reflects such great sacrifice of so many over the years.

‘The last HMS Penzance was sunk in August 1940 with the loss of 90 ship’s company of 108 on board.

‘She was a ship not much larger than the current HMS Penzance, and the only military escort for that convoy and so very much on her own.’
