COMMUTERS in Gosport are being urged to join a commitment to ditch their cars and switch to public transport.

The call is part of the Big Green Commuter Challenge, which runs for a week from next Monday.

The Gosport Transport and Sustainability Partnership is encouraging businesses in the town to compete with each other to see who can save the most miles during the course of the week.

Staff who rack up the highest mileage by commuting without their cars will win a trophy for their company.

Employees from the winning firm will also be entered into a prize draw to win a short break with Lucketts Travel.

Tim Houghton, chairman of partnership, said: ‘This competition is a great opportunity for people in Gosport to think about alternatives to using the car every day. It’s a bit of fun but also a genuine opportunity for people to take a look at their travel habits and see if they can save money and find a more enjoyable and relaxing way of getting to work.’
