KNEE injuries, punctures and strong headwinds couldn’t stop a pair of sailors completing a gruelling 100-mile bike ride in a single day for charity.

Lieutenant Commander Iain Tall and Lieutenant Andy Cowie, from HMS Collingwood in Fareham, cycled the South Downs Way to raise more than £600 for Cancer Research UK and Help for Heroes.

The ride from Eastbourne to Winchester included 90 miles off-road and more than 10,000ft of ascent. Despite their trials, a quick cake stop at Queen Elizabeth Country Park at Horndean helped them complete the task.

Lt Cowie said: ‘We both underestimated how hard the challenge would be but we were raising money for two excellent charities and the generosity of friends, colleagues and family made it all worthwhile.’
