HOSPICE staff and volunteers are celebrating having raised more than £5,000 in a day of fundraising for the Dorothy’s Dream appeal.

The Rowans Hospice held its bed push event at the weekend, which was in aid of the campaign to provide a hospice at home service.

The event, which saw more than 60 people push a bed from the hospice in Purbrook to Canoe Lake in Southsea, raised thousands of pounds as part of the hospice’s push to reach the £1m target for the Dorothy’s Dream appeal.

Chief executive of the hospice Ruth White said the event was a huge success.

She said: ‘It was lovely to see the community getting involved.

‘Firefighters, police, community support officers and HMS Sultan joined nurses, other clinical staff and volunteers in the parade.

‘Particular memories are of a lovely lady handing me a bag full of coins from a bus and also the lady who joined us on her mobility scooter.’

Crowds of people threw money in buckets as the bed pushers made their way through Portsmouth from Purbrook – some even leaning out of their car windows to throw in their change.

Pubs around the area also fundraised in-house and dozens turned out to the hospice’s Big Picnic at Canoe Lake to help donate even more cash.

The fundraiser has helped the appeal reach more than £724,140.

But there are still thousands of pounds left to raise and the hospice is urging people to get behind the Big Push to hit the magic million.

Already hospice staff are planning future events to help hit the target, including once again making use of the custom-designed bed from the weekend.

The Rowans is planning a Top Gear-themed fundraiser where teams will push the bed around a track and compete for the fastest lap time.

More details will be confirmed soon.

Meanwhile, people can carry on supporting the Dorothy’s Dream appeal by making donations by calling (023) 9223 8531, visiting the rowanshospice.co.uk, or texting ‘Dream’ to 70800 to donate £5.

If you would like to hold a fundraiser for the campaign you can call the hospice or email fundraising@rowanshospice.co.uk. The new hospice at home service is set to be launched in September this year.
