EMSWORTH’S Dragon Boat race had to be called off because of dreadful weather over the weekend.

Along with several other local events the annual competition had to be postponed because of fierce winds and driving rain.

The landlord of the Blue Bell Inn, in South Street, Giles Babb said he was disappointed the day hadn’t gone as planned, but said the teams would definitely be going head-to-head in August instead.

‘Obviously it’s a shame,’ he said.

‘But the weather was absolutely awful, there really was no choice but to call it off.

‘Everyone tried their best to make it work but it wasn’t a complete disaster – we still sold lots of paella.’

He added that the day had still been good fun despite the disappointing outcome.

‘We are looking at either August 12 or August 19 for the reschedule,’ he said.

‘I’m currently speaking to the sailing club and the guys who bring the boats. Together we’ll sort something out and hopefully it will still be a really great day.’

This year’s Dragon Boat race was brought forward to be part of the week-long St George celebrations in Havant.
