STAFF at Tesco Metro, Cosham, had to act quickly after water spurted out of a drain inside the store.

Workers mopped up the pool of water which flowed out of the drain in the bakery section shortly after the store opened at 7am yesterday morning.

The store remained open while the clean-up was carried out.

The incident was caused by an outside drain which had filled with rain water and leaves from nearby trees.

Pete Bailey, the shop’s service team leader, said: ‘Luckily we didn’t get water coming in through the entrance of the shop.

‘The clean-up was carried out swiftly and it didn’t affect people doing their shopping.’

Meanwhile the torrential downpour meant traders suffered poor takings.

Dil Dave, who owns Drapewise, in High Street, Cosham, said: ‘Business has been absolutely rubbish. The road at the back of my shop was completely flooded.’

Tony Broome, of nearby Shoefix, added: ‘It’s definitely been a lot quieter.’
