WORK to prevent flooding in a West Sussex village has begun.

Contractors for West Sussex County Council are working on drainage systems at Fishbourne Road East, Fishbourne.

Two culverts which have become blocked with debris are being cleared out.

Excavations will be made to increase the capacity of gulleys, and some minor reshaping of the road surface will be done to aid the flow of surface water.

The works will cost about £40,000 and is expected to be finished in mid-June.

Councillor Pieter Montyn, who oversees highways, said: ‘This area of Fishbourne suffered during the floods last June, so we were keen to press on and get started.

‘We hope any disruption is minimised.’
