STUDENTS miles apart have collaborated on an art project which marks the 50th anniversary of the partnership between the cities of Portsmouth and Haifa in Israel.

The exhibition at Portsmouth’s Guildhall which runs until February 17 features art from Haifa’s Tiltan College on the subject of the religious, environmental and industrial aspects of Haifa.

Highbury College students have also produced artwork portraying the journey from Haifa to Portsmouth.

Mali Alon, head of graphic design at Tiltan, said: ‘We have many religions in Haifa. We have industry and art, mountains and the sea. There is a big mix.

‘This exhibition aims to show the people of Portsmouth what their twin city is like.’

The Haifa-Portsmouth Friendship Link Committee is now considering a reciprocal exhibition to be held in Haifa.

Its chairman Alex Bentley visited Haifa last March to discuss commemorating the 50 years of ‘friendship’ and furthering the links between the two cities.

The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Cheryl Buggy, who has seen the exhibition, said: ‘All of these images are incredibly striking.’
