A CHILDREN’S author paid a visit to two primary schools.

John Dougherty, poet, songwriter and author of many children’s books went to Swanmore and Dundridge primary schools.

He read from one of his books and answered all the children’s questions.

John provided tips and insight into how he writes books and devises characters.

He said: ‘As an author, school visits are an important way of helping to inspire reading for pleasure – and I found the children at Swanmore more than ready to be inspired.

‘They joined in, listened well, and asked some terrific questions.’

John Paterson, headteacher of Swanmore Primary, said: ‘95 per cent of our Year 4 children thought meeting John made a difference to the book and the characters they had read or heard about.

‘It’s vital we inspire children in this way. I’ve watched the children laugh, learn and get truly animated about what they can do with their imagination when it comes to writing.’
