TWO catering students have returned from Germany holding a trophy – as winners of a army cookery competition.

Matt Essery, 18, and Kate Edwards, 17, won the civilian section of Exercise Rhino Caterer.

Over three days the pair, from South Downs College, competed against more than 30 teams of military and civilian contestants.

The teams slept in tents and used a dustbin oven to cook ingredients and prepared meals for 20 soldiers from ration packs.

They also prepared a dish for the judges in a live theatre cook-off.

One of the judges was Simon Rimmer, from Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch.

Kate said: ‘We really enjoyed it, despite the early starts and late finishes! I will always remember this incredible experience.’

Their lecturer Iain Baillie added that he was ‘very proud’.
