THE ACHIEVEMENTS of college students have been celebrated.

Havant College held an awards ceremony for outstanding students with more than 100 parents and carers in the audience.

The awards were sponsored by a range of universities from across the country.

Principal John McDougall said: ‘The awards evenings are a great opportunity to celebrate achievement and to recognise the particular contribution of individual students.

‘This is what makes Havant College the high-achieving college that it is. Our students are the foundation of our reputation and we have much to be proud of.’

Guest speaker Laura Gilchrist, a Met Office duty weather manager at the BBC weather centre, studied at the college before taking a degree in meteorology at the University of Reading.

She said: ‘I was delighted to return to Havant College and be part of the prize-giving. I remember struggling with one of my subjects but I managed to pass with the excellent support I received from everyone at the college.

‘It was a real honour to be invited back and say a few words before the presentation ceremony.’

The students, who graduated in May last year, have gone on to universities such as Bath, Warwick and Cambridge.
