The Fareham base played host to the popular cake sale, with sailors manning the stall throughout the morning.

Members of the Woodentots Parent Staff Association (WPSA) invited all personnel to attend the cake sale, encouraging them to make a £1 donation in return for a treat of their choice.

The selection of treats on offer showcased the baking talents of members of the WPSA, including homemade pecan cupcakes, indulgent chocolate brownies and chunky slices of Victoria sponge cake.

The cake sale contributed a total of £175 towards the nursery’s fundraising efforts.

The team have now raised £3,675 since the beginning of the project and are well on target to reach their goal of £5,000 by September.

Since 1996 Woodentots has operated in response to the growing need for childcare required by all personnel working within HMS Collingwood and other local military establishments.

The WPSA was formed in February 2014, aiming to further strengthen the communication links between the nursery and parents.

The garden project is designed to benefit the children who attend the nursery, in line with the WPSA’s objectives with plans including age specific learning areas, a sensory garden and a checkerboard play area.

Chairperson of the WPSA, Lieutenant Commander Caroline Thomas-Hoefsmit said: ‘In addition to our fundraising ideas, we are also currently applying for grants from the Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity and The Annington Trust in the hope of gaining some support as this is a huge project for us.

‘We will also be representing Woodentots at the HMS Collingwood Open Day on June 4 by offering face painting for children attending the event, in exchange for a donation.’
