SEVEN in 10 poor teenagers would drop out of school if plans to scrap the Education Maintenance Allowance went ahead, research by the University and College Union suggests.

Thousands of students from Portsmouth and Hampshire receive the weekly payment between £10 and £30.

But the Coalition has announced the grant is to be withdrawn, and it is has already been closed to new applicants.
