TEACHER Erika Biddlecombe has reached the final of a national teaching award after she helped a pupil find his voice again.

Erika, who teaches at St James’ Primary School in Emsworth, has been nominated for Pearson’s primary school teacher of the year.

She was nominated by parent Lisa Fawcett for helping her son, Lewis, who suffers from selective mutism and was struggling to speak in class.

Erika encouraged him to engage in email conversations which resulted in him leaving voicemails and then reading books down the phone to her.

Headteacher Bruce Waeland said: ‘She is a superb teacher who makes an immense contribution to the school.’
