One of Portsmouth’s most esteemed poets has joined a primary school’s senior leadership team.

Sam Cox, Portsmouth’s Poet Laureate, has joined Ark Dickens Primary Academy as maternity cover for the deputy principal.

Ms Cox says she already has ideas about developing an appreciation of performance poetry at Ark Dickens.

She said: ‘As Portsmouth’s Poet Laureate, I’m involved in a lot of poetry workshops in schools, local arts centres and performance spaces, so I’m interested in developing links between those events and the children at Ark Dickens.

‘I’m very passionate about this city.

‘There’s a fantastic and vibrant arts scene and there’s always opportunities for young people to be involved in community events in Portsmouth.’

Ms Cox is an experienced teacher and has also worked as deputy principal at Portsmouth’s Charter Academy, which was announced last year as the country’s
most-improved secondary school.
