Families joined in to make event special

One of Britain's best-loved children's poets thrilled youngsters at a school when he visited for the school's poetry week.

Brian Moses performed some of his famous poems such as The Sssnake Hotel and Walking With My Iguana at Portsmouth High School Junior School.

He then delivered a workshop for the schoolgirls to help them write their own poetry about a happy family memory.

It was not just pupils at the all-girl independent school who had the opportunity to work with Brian, as their parents, brothers and sisters, grandmothers and granddads joined in a family workshop after school.

Brian has performed his poetry about monsters, shopping trolleys and football matches in more than 2,000 schools across the UK and Europe, animating his stories and poetry to entertain pupils and teachers alike.

He has published more than 160 books to date such as Trouble At The Dinosaur Cafe and Monster Poems, and is also a reading champion for the Literacy Trust – an independent charity that has changed lives through literacy since 1993.

Helen Parrott, who organised poetry week at the school in Southsea, said: 'Brian is such a lively and energetic character and has the ability to inspire through his performances.

'I know the girls absolutely loved working with him and I'm looking forward to reading their poems. I think the parents really enjoyed their session too.

'As a school we have lots of events for the whole family to get involved, be it taking part in fun runs or family bike rides, so it is great to add poetry to that list!'

The schoolgirls also explored poems on an animal theme throughout the week, practising hard for a poetry recital competition which was later judged by Rosemary Comrie, head of drama at the senior school.
