PARENTS and children at a Southsea school sat down to a good read at the successful launch of a family reading club.

The new weekly session at Cottage Grove Primary for three to five-year-olds aims to boost interest in reading among the youngest members of the school.

Eight families turned up on the day and enjoyed choosing books from the school library before sitting in a quiet corner and reading to each other.

Ann MacFarlane, teacher, said: ‘It was a fantastic first day and the feedback from children and parents was really positive.

‘The idea is to encourage children and parents to enjoy reading together.

‘A lot of children love to have stories read to them but sometimes parents find it hard to find time.’

She added: ‘It’s all part of a big push in the nursery to inspire the children to read and get caught up in books.

‘If we can get them hooked to reading at this age then they will be set for life.’
