RED GERANIUMS, white snowdrops and lemon-coloured primroses will be a perennial reminder of Charles Dickens at Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard.

The Charles Dickens border of colourful flowers in the dockyard’s garden was formally opened by the Friends of the Porter’s Garden (FPG) yesterday afternoon.

But visitors will have to wait until summer to see the geraniums bloom. The flowers were Dickens’ favourites.

Dr Ann Coats, FPG co-ordinator, said: ‘It was a fantastic ceremony and appropriate as Dickens’s father John worked in the dockyard from 1807 to 1812 and very likely took Charles in to show him the pay office.

‘In Charles Dickens’s memory I am looking forward to seeing the geraniums flower.’
