COLLEGES have paid senior staff in the Portsmouth area more than £100,000 a year, new statistics reveal.

The highest earner in 2013/2014 was Lyn Surgeon, then principal of South Downs College, who took home £167,099. Mike Gaston became the new principal in April this year.

The figures, gathered by The TaxPayers’ Alliance, also reveal the Waterlooville college paid another staff member more than £100,000.

A member of staff at Fareham College received more than £100,000. Nationally, 1,094 school employees received salaries greater than £100,000 and 110 bagged more than £150,000.

TaxPayers’ Alliance boss Jonathan Isaby said: ‘The pay and perks enjoyed by those working at our schools and universities - and indeed across the entire public sector - must more accurately reflect how well they are doing their jobs.’
