YOUNGSTERS from Portsmouth and Chichester can join an award-winning music group.

The Urban Vocal Group (UVG) is a free music charity for 11 to 18-year-olds who sing contemporary arrangements of current tunes and pop classics, providing professional vocal tuition and performance opportunities regardless of experience.

The charity was founded in 2008 by musician and teacher Charlie Fletcher, in Havant. His aim was to create a community of young singers, bringing young people from different areas and backgrounds together.

Now a grant from the National Foundation of Youth Music has funded two new groups in Portsmouth and Chichester. They begin in September.

Charlie said: ‘Members of the group not only learn correct vocal technique and multi-part harmonies but also learn about the music industry, write songs, and record in professional studios.

‘The group has performed at more than 40 events including performances at the Southsea Show, the Wedgewood Rooms and the House of Commons and have recorded 15 original songs.

‘UVG now has a base in the Guildhall in the heart of Portsmouth and is closer to achieving the dream of being the largest free music group for young people in the south.

‘This is an exciting time for the charity and we are delighted that we can offer these opportunities to more young musicians, bringing them out of the bedroom into an environment where they receive professional tuition, build confidence and make music.’

No experience is necessary, just a love of singing.
