Students at Portsmouth’s Charter Academy were thrilled with their results.

Of the school’s 67 GCSE students, 79 per cent achieved the gold standard of five or more A*-Cs including English and maths.

Charter Academy principal Dame Sharon Hollows said: ‘There has been a big improvement from last year, which was already good. They’ve got some really wonderful results.

‘They’re better because we’ve had more time with the students. A lot of students have been here five years now, this is Charter’s fifth year.’

Charter Academy student and junior female European Boxing Champion Ebonie Jones, 16, of Drayton, was delighted with her three A*s, two Bs and a C.

‘I’m over the moon,’ she said.

Ebonie was crowned European champion after beating Poland’s Agata Kawecka in a three-round fight in Assisi, Italy, last month.

She plans to specialise in sports at South Downs College and eventually box professionally.

She said: ‘Sometimes it was hard to concentrate on both boxing and school at the same time, but the school really helped me out a lot’.
