King Richard School was buzzing as Year 11 students collected their GCSE exam results.

Many of the pupils at the Portsmouth school did better than they anticipated and were ecstatic.

Courtney Toms, 16, from Wymering, got two A*’s, two A’s, seven B’s and two C’s.

She will now be going to Southdowns College to study sport science.

She said: ‘I was really really happy with my results but also a little relieved. There was a lot of pressure with all the exams but it was okay in the end.’

Adrian Tucker, deputy headteacher, said: ‘We are really please with our overall results.

‘This is a great achievement by our students.’
