TWO students have won awards in carpentry at their school.

Year 11 girls Katherine Turner and Grace McClean are the winners of this year’s Horndean Technology College Carpentry Awards.

They received a set of woodworking chisels from the Gosport branch of Timber and Builders’ Merchants, Covers.

The BTEC construction course includes modules in technical drawing, bricklaying, carpentry and decorating.

John Ray, site manager at Covers in Gosport, said: ‘It’s great to see some of the female students at the top of their game this year and with more girls coming through, we expect there to be a reflective change across the industry.

‘We do everything we can to support young people learning the trades; making sure they are well skilled ensures a high standard of construction for the future industry.’

Recently, Covers helped construct a memorial garden at Clanfield Village Hall to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.
