IT WAS twice the delight for a college as it was named training centre of excellence for the second year running.

St Vincent College, in Gosport, was chosen as the best at The News’ Hair and Beauty Awards on Saturday.

More than 350 stylists, beauticians and therapists attended the awards ceremony at Portsmouth Guildhall to celebrate the best in the hair and beauty industry.

Lecturers and students from St Vincent were delighted to be given the first award of the night for being the best training centre.

The college also won the training centre of excellence category at last year’s awards.

Caron Butcher, lecturer, said: ‘It is amazing.

‘We had such a fantastic time last year and we were really pleased to win so we thought we’d enter again.

‘We have amazing students that work hard all the time. They are innovative and driven.’

Lecturer Jamie Martin said: ‘It is nice to be recognised for all the effort the students have put in.

‘The fact we are recognised by the community we work in is great, we are so grateful.’

Students were accompanying their lecturers on the night.

Anne-Marie Evans, 25, of Gosport, who is studying level one City and Guilds hairdressing, said: ‘They have treated me so well. They are very dedicated teachers and they give us their all. They are fantastic.’

Alexandra Chance, 34, of Gosport, is about to graduate from the second year of a level two City and Guilds hairdressing and barbering course.

‘She has already secured a job at The Mane Hall, Stoke Road, Gosport.

Miss Chance said: ‘It has been brilliant. It has instilled a lot of passion in me.

‘The teachers have been brilliant. It’s all about going out there and being professional.’

The runner-up of the training centre of excellence award went to Haha Academy, North End.

This year there were awards in 14 different categories.

The News will be running a series of stories all week highlighting a selection of winners.

Ryan is an ace apprentice

HE’S only been qualified for six months and this talented barber has already built himself a reputation as being one of the best.

Ryan Searle, from The Library Barbers Club of Southsea, won the apprentice of the year award at The News’ Hair and Beauty Awards.

The 21-year-old from Havant finished an intensive course at the London School of Barbering in January and his talent is already being noticed.

Ryan was nominated for the award by his boss Josh Carroll-Smith so the win was a surprise.

‘It was quite a shock,’ he said.

‘I’m over the moon.’
