CHANCELLOR of the University of Portsmouth Sheila Hancock broke the ground on the site of a new £14m arts extension this week.

The development on the site of the Eldon Building is due to house a new gallery, lecture theatre, IT facilities and teaching spaces for the faculty of creative and cultural industries from September 2013.

Sheila said: ‘The university continues to invest in the creative and cultural arts, and this development is an excellent opportunity for staff, students and local artists to share ideas, skills and inspiration.’

The development will bring all the cultural industries departments under one roof – including the school of art, media and design (ADM).

Dr Simon Claridge, dean of the faculty of cultural and creative industries, said: ‘This development will be a place where staff, students and the local community can generate dynamic cultural, creative and commercial opportunities such as design shows, exhibitions, performances and recitals, screening and gallery events.’
