UNIVERSITIES wanting to charge more than £6,000 in tuition fees from 2012 will have to work harder to recruit students from poor backgrounds.

In a final Guidance Letter sent to the Office of Fair Access (OFA), ministers told its director to be demanding of universities seeking to charge higher fees. Universities minister and Havant MP David Willetts said: ‘The guidance will require universities to take much more determined action on widening participation and report annually on the progress.’

The government has revealed a new scholarship programme that will see 50,000 students a year win a scholarship worth at least £3,000 from 2014.
