A LOCAL authority is hoping to recruit more teachers at the first-ever Teacher Recruitment Fair.

Hampshire County Council is holding the event at The Guildhall, Winchester, on January 28 from midday until 7pm.

The council is keen to attract teachers from Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and further afield.

People considering a career in teaching will be able to find out more about the role.

Peter Edgar, executive member for education, said: ‘Due to growth in pupil numbers as a result of both birth rate increases and new housing developments, we are faced with the need to create new school places and we will be opening more new schools.

‘Our schools have found it more challenging to recruit strong fields of candidates to vacant teacher posts.

‘We are very lucky to have a high proportion of schools that are good or outstanding.

‘This cannot be achieved without good teachers which is why we have taken the unusual step of holding our own teacher recruitment fair.’
