SHE’S a hard worker who is regularly coming home from school with certificates from the headteacher.

Now, Skye Johnson has been rewarded for her efforts with the Learner of the Year award in The News Youth Awards.

The eight-year-old is a pupil at Hart Plain Junior School in Cowplain, and often has her head in a book whether she is at school or not.

‘I feel excited. I didn’t think I would win. I’m shocked,’ she said.

Mum Heidi Johnson, 37, added: ‘I’m overwhelmed. I’m very happy for her and I’m very proud.

‘She’s always working. She’s inspiring.

‘She’s got two older siblings and they look up to her.

‘She’s encouraging her little brother as well as he is four and they play school together. She teaches him.

‘We go out to a restaurant and she will take a book. I’m very proud of her.’

Skye wants to be a teacher when she’s older. She especially enjoys maths but also likes reading and writing her own stories.
