AN INNOVATIVE student design for an indoor beach complex has come third in a UK competition.

Students at Warblington School in Havant are celebrating their achievement at the Go4SET Engineering Developing Trust challenge, for their concept of an indoor beach called the iBeach complete with year-round sun, a spa and a surf simulator.

Earlier in the year the team of six 13 to 14-year-olds beat 11 schools across the region who had come up with ideas for the competition to design a community sports venue, including sky-diving simulators and football stadiums.

The iBeach, with solar heating, ground source heat pumps and rainwater harvesting, impressed judges at the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Team member Eleanor Wemyss, 14, said: ‘Hopefully, one day iBeach will be built and we will all get our names carved into the side of it.’

Headteacher Owen Davies said: ‘We’re proud of this achievement.’
