A STUDENT has been presented with a shield in recognition for his hard work.

Dad, electrician and Highbury College student Sam Meredith has received recognition for his hard work from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

David Pearce, chairman of the IET retired members branch, presented Sam with a shield bearing his name, which will be displayed in Highbury’s engineering department.

Sam, 27, has recently completed a Level 3 BTEC course in Engineering on a day release from his work as an electrician at Debut, a facilities management firm who work with the MoD.

He said: ‘It’s been a challenge because I have two young boys so I have been waiting until they are in bed before studying in the evenings.

‘Sometimes I’ve had a baby on the lap and a book in a hand.

‘I was pleasantly surprised to have won the award but I’ve put hard work in and committed to my studies.

‘I’ve kept up a good consistent level in my assignments and followed that with good results in my exams.’

David Pearce said: ‘Our branch of the IET started this award a dozen or more years ago and it gives young trainees something to aim for.

‘Clearly Sam is a bright young man who is trying hard and is very committed.’
