Hundreds praised for being Star Readers
Back in March last year we pledged to give good, young readers the recognition they deserve.
You can win trophies for sports and prizes for beauty contests but we asked what is there for doing well at one of the most important skills anyone can ever have – reading.
We at The News wanted to redress the balance – and we think we've done that as part of our Spread The Word literacy campaign.
Since March 31 last year we have asked local schools to nominate a pupil every month who they think is a Star Reader. A pupil who has shown great improvement for reading or enthusiasm for books.
And every month since we've published the names of those pupils to show you can get rewarded.
In the 11 months so far we have recognised the literacy skills of 314 youngsters through our Star Readers scheme.
But this month is the last group as the Spread The Word campaign comes to a close next Monday.
Among this month's Star Readers is Louise Garnett, of Crookhorn Technology College in Purbrook.
One of the books the 13-year-old's recently read is Eclipse, the third in the vampire Twilight saga.
She takes her place on the roll of honour with our other Star Readers for March:
