WHEN Julie Powell was diagnosed with breast cancer, she felt it was important to give something back.

The 37-year-old organised a Pink Day at Isambard Brunel Junior School in North End, where her nine-year-old son Oakley Saunders attends.

She did a big bake sale to raise money for Breast Cancer Care after she was diagnosed with the disease in February.

Julie found a lump under her armpit.

She said: ‘I acted on it straight away, as scared as I was.

‘It’s so important to raise awareness.’

Julie has since had an operation and six lots of chemotherapy. She is due to have another operation in the new year.

A total of £375 was raised on the day.

She said: ‘It was brilliant. We raised more than I expected to raise.

‘I had a good turnout. I’m really pleased with how many people turned up.’
