MORE than 100 students were inspired by a member of the House of Lords to take a more active role in politics.
Baroness Detta O’Cathain went to Portchester Community School where she explained the workings of parliament and how the Lords were instrumental in scrutinising legislation – for example the recent controversial healthcare bill.
In return, boys and girls questioned her on a range of issues from Afghanistan to the economy.
Alec Roberts, deputy head, said: ‘The students were won over. She made them realise that if you want real change you’ve got to meet your politicians, go to surgeries and express your views.
‘That’s what real democracy means.’
