A STUDENT from the University of Portsmouth has come second in a global engineering and technology competition for his knowledge and understanding of cloud computing.

John Wheal, 20, from Colchester, is in his second year of studying for his MEng in computer engineering.

He was runner up in the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Present Around The World south-east area final.

The annual competition is for young engineers and technicians including students and professionals aged 18 to 26.

Competitors are judged on a 10-minute presentation on an engineering or technology subject of their choice followed by questions from an audience of specialists.

Cloud computing is where all data is stored on servers accessed by the internet.

In the regional final John was up against students from Imperial College and Cambridge University and young professionals working in the technology industries.
