Long-lost book by city writer is discovered
A BOOK collector is hailing the discovery of a long lost book by a Portsmouth-born children’s adventure writer.
At Their Country’s Call by Percy Westerman has now been officially recognised as his 21st story about the First World War.
Enthusiast Nigel Gossop, from Cosham, has confirmed the exciting find after spending months investigating whether the book had been published under another title.
He said: ‘We have been reluctant to release any information about this until now as we wanted to check as many collections and sources that we could.
‘So far, we have been unable to find this story in print anywhere else. It does appear that it is a new story.’
Westerman wrote his first book in 1908 while living in Portsmouth.
He went on to pen a further 173 books over the next 50 years.
Mr Gossop, who found the new book by chance last year in Dorset, will reveal details about the book at a seminar at Portsmouth Grammar School on February 11.
