A SCHOOLGIRL described as a brilliant all-rounder in sport has won the honour of carrying the Olympic torch this summer.

Mazie Watson, of Mayfield School, North End, Portsmouth, recently discovered she would be one of the 8,000 torchbearers who will have the responsibility of carrying the flame in the run-up to this year’s Games in London.

PE teacher Carly Breen, who nominated Mazie, said: ‘Mazie is an outstanding all-rounder in sport, getting involved in all sporting activities inside and outside of school.’

Mazie said: ‘I’m really excited to be chosen, it’s a great honour and I feel it will help make me a good sports ambassador for Mayfield.

‘I am really looking forward to running with the torch and meeting sporting role models along the way.’

David Jeapes, headteacher, added: ‘Mazie is a dedicated athlete who has done much to promote sport across our school. We are now planning how we can best support her in the run-up to the event and on the day itself.
