TALENTED young musicians are touring around Europe.

To mark their 50th year, members of the Hampshire County Youth Bands have taken part in concerts throughout the year and are now on tour in places including Italy, Croatia and Germany.

The concert programmes feature a range of musical styles for brass bands, in pieces by composers ranging from Edvard Greig to Havah Nagilah, and a specially-commissioned piece, premiered this year at their 50th anniversary concert, entitled Zest! by Kenneth Downie.

It also features solo pieces and performances by the Hampshire County Youth Band, Training Band and Junior Band.

John Knight, 92, formed the original band in 1963.

He conducted part of their big concert in April.

For many of the older students in the band this will be their farewell tour as they are leaving to start careers, or go on to study a range of courses, including music, medicine and history at university in the autumn.

The Hampshire County Youth Orchestra is also touring Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany. A highlight will be their performance at St Catherine’s Church, Krakow, where many famous composers have premiered their compositions.
