Ofsted says Portsmouth primary is making ‘good progress’

A SCHOOL which was given a ‘notice to improve’ is making good progress towards its goals after a recent inspection.

The Victory Primary School in Allaway Avenue, Paulsgrove, was rated inadequate overall in an Ofsted inspection in November last year.

Inspectors said pupils were underachieving in maths and English and that improvements were needed to the quality of teaching.

But at the end of last term, a monitoring inspection was carried out which showed that satisfactory progress is now being made.

Headteacher Peter Sykes, said: ‘The thing we were generally pleased with is it recognised the hard work everybody at the school had put in since the inspection in November.

‘Pupils say lessons are a lot more enjoyable. All the generally positive comments we were really pleased with.

‘We have done a lot of work. We have more to do, we aren’t there yet. We realise we have got to continue working hard to improve standards at the school.’

Inspectors noted that the curriculum has been revised to introduce a themed approach to learning for all age groups.

The school has made changes to the roles and responsibilities of English and maths leaders.

Pupils told inspectors they are enjoying their lessons and they are well behaved in class and have a better attitude towards learning.

The headteacher and the deputy headteacher even stepped in with a teaching role after a member of staff was off sick.

Mr Sykes added: ‘That was for a short period of time. We thought we wouldn’t be able to find somebody else to step in at short notice.

‘We really enjoyed doing it. It’s been a while since I was a class teacher. I think the children benefited hugely from it.

‘The important thing is that there has been a huge togetherness across the school.

‘We have changed the way in which we approach a lot of things. We have put together a programme of skills so the children know what they are expected to do.

‘It shows the levels of work that is needed for the children to achieve those levels. It’s been really successful. I feel very positive.’
