THE sponsors of Portsmouth’s only academy school have been applauded by public services union Unison for agreeing to boost the salaries of staff on less than £21,000 by £250.
Ark, which runs Charter Academy in Somers Town, is the first national group to agree to the pay rise to help the lower paid.
Jon Richards, Unison’s senior national officer for education, said: ‘Inflation is eating into the purses of low paid workers who can ill afford to have their pay frozen.
‘I’m pleased that Ark has now agreed to pay up and urge all schools, including academies, to follow suit.’
When the government imposed a public sector worker pay freeze the chancellor said those on less than £21,000 would get £250, but some academies refused to pay.
