A FORMER student turned poet is to return to the University of Portsmouth.

Simon Armitage will visit the city on Thursday, November 28 to give a poetry reading for students, staff and members of the public.

Mr Armitage studied geography at the university in the early 1980s and went on to have a successful career as a poet, playwright and novelist.

Dr Páraic Finnerty, from the School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies, said: ‘Simon Armitage’s poetry reading is very significant because it is a reminder to our staff and students that their university fostered, shaped and influenced one of the most successful and respected contemporary British poets.

‘His poems are incredibly funny, but they are also insightful and represent powerful statements of social protest on behalf of those who are disadvantaged in society.’

It will take place from 5pm to 7.30pm.

Admission is free but tickets have to be booked through poetryarmitage.eventbrite.co.uk, or by calling (023) 9284 3757.
