Portsmouth school employs nanny to get Isle of Wight pupils home

PORTSMOUTH High School has launched a new service to provide a nanny to escort school pupils from the Isle of Wight on the hovercraft.

The new scheme, supported by Hovertravel, sees Priscilla Ortega accompany girls who live on the Isle of Wight to school on the mainland in Portsmouth.

Headteacher Jane Prescott, said: ‘We understand that it is rarely practical for parents to accompany their child across to the mainland to school.

‘It is also a daunting prospect for parents to choose for their child to travel alone on the hovercraft each day.

‘The aim is to give parents complete peace of mind and to give younger children a new confidence about crossing the water to school.’

Priscilla travels to meet pupils in the Ryde hover terminal. At the other end, the school minibus takes her and the pupils directly to the school. The whole process is reversed at the end of the day.
