THE Chinese New Year got off to a flying start when primary schoolchildren were visited by the Yi-Quin Lion Dance Club.

Boys and girls at Portsmouth Grammar Junior School watched as a brightly coloured dragon came to life and performed the traditional good luck dance to the sounds of the strong beat of the drums.

It then gathered up oranges from the centre of the circle and threw them into the crowd.

These were followed by a lettuce that was shredded and spread amongst the audience.

Finally, the enchanting creature presented the children with a scroll representing luck and fortune for the forthcoming year.

Headmaster Peter Hopkinson said: ‘We are very grateful to the members of the Yi Quin Dance Club for providing a fantastic culturally-enriching experience for our children.

‘Everyone enjoyed the performance. We hope that it brings us good fortune for the year ahead.’
